Salting

Summary

Salting is a cryptographic technique used to enhance the security of passwords and sensitive data by adding random data (known as the salt) to the input before hashing.

Detailed Description

Salting involves appending or prepending unique random data (the salt) to each password before applying a hashing function. This process makes the resulting hash output unique for each input, even if multiple users have the same password. As a result, an attacker cannot easily use precomputed tables (such as rainbow tables) to crack passwords, as the salt will differ for each user, thus requiring a unique approach to break each hash.
