Internet Protocol

Summary

Internet Protocol (IP) is a set of rules that govern the format of data sent over the internet or other networks.

Detailed Description

Internet Protocol is a fundamental protocol used for transmitting data across networks. It operates at the Network Layer of the Internet Protocol Suite and is responsible for addressing and routing packets of data so that they can travel across networks and arrive at the correct destination. IP addresses, which are unique identifiers for devices on a network, play a crucial role in this process. There are two primary versions of the Internet Protocol: IPv4, which uses a 32-bit address system allowing for approximately 4.3 billion addresses; and IPv6, introduced to address the IPv4 exhaustion, which uses a 128-bit address system that allows for an almost infinite number of unique addresses.
